Titled simply *The Thanksgiving turkey*, this cabinet card was made by the Alfcamp studio in Elizabeth, New Jersey, around 1900. It shows a holiday meal at its center, with the bird and the cooking that went into it as the focus. The record ties the scene to African American domestic life, a subject that appeared less often in commercial photography of the period than studio portraits did. Cabinet cards, mounted on stiff card stock, were the standard format for studio portraits and staged scenes from the 1880s into the early 1900s. The copyright notation on the card indicates the maker registered the image, which suggests it was meant for sale or wider circulation.
