Few photographs in the Bain News Service files tie a holiday to a single bird quite like this one, though the record leaves the specifics open. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work made by one of the first commercial news photo agencies in the United States, which supplied pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from Bain's own notes, which were not independently verified, so the scene, date and location should be read with some caution. Thanksgiving, which became a national holiday in 1863, was a frequent subject for press photographers of the period, and pictures like this one show how the feast was presented to a public reading about it in print.
