A turkey destined for the president's Thanksgiving table is the subject of this 1929 negative, made just two days before the holiday that year. Herbert Hoover was in the White House then, and the practice of presenting a gift bird to the president ahead of Thanksgiving was already a familiar news photo. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., agency that worked in glass plate negatives, made many such pictures for newspapers and magazines. Its images are valued today as a record of how official holiday customs were staged for the press.
