The only name attached to this 8 by 6 inch glass negative is the Pittsburg Water Heater Co., a title taken from the negative or its sleeve by the National Photo Company and not independently verified. The image is dated between 1920 and 1921, a period when Pittsburgh's manufacturers were central to its economy and commercial photographers often documented factories and their products. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Viewers should notice the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which result from natural deterioration of the original coatings.
