Hull House, the Chicago settlement house that Jane Addams and Ellen Gates Starr founded in 1889, is the venue named in this silkscreen poster for an art exhibition. Produced in 1936 under the Federal Art Project, it reflects the WPA's effort to employ artists and bring art into community spaces, and silkscreen let artists make bold, color-saturated designs in quantity. The February 1940 date stamp on the back shows how long such posters stayed in circulation and in files.
