Its direct appeal, "The U.S. Marines want you. Enlist today," echoes the "I Want You" poster James Montgomery Flagg made for the Army during World War I. Flagg, a popular illustrator, produced this color poster in 1942, when the Marine Corps was growing rapidly after the attack on Pearl Harbor and as fighting spread across the Pacific. Recruiting art of this kind was meant to speak straight to young men, using bold lettering and a single clear command.
