A copy negative on glass, this picture shows an aircraft over open water, and its title was devised by Library of Congress staff to describe the scene. The negative is dated 1924, when airplanes were still novel enough that images of them flying over the ocean drew wide public interest in newspapers and magazines. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C. commercial studio, made and kept pictures like this, and the Library received this example as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and other blemishes on the glass come from natural deterioration of its original coatings, so they are worth keeping in mind when judging fine detail.
