Dated April 1, 1929, the day after Easter that year, this scene shows children rolling eggs across a lawn, a custom that drew crowds to Washington for decades. The record does not name the exact site, but the Easter egg roll was closely tied to the capital. The National Photo Company, a Washington commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative, and its work documents everyday public life in the city. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes on the negative, which come from the natural breakdown of its original coating.
