Egg rolling was a popular spring pastime, and this glass negative, dated April 21, 1924, captures one of its gatherings. Washington's best-known version was the annual children's egg roll on the White House grounds, which drew families from across the city. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that photographed the capital in the early twentieth century, made pictures like this one for public sale. Look for the streaks and small blemishes on the glass, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating over time.
