The New Masonic Temple was a headquarters for the city's Freemason lodges, a type of large civic hall that Boston's fraternal organizations built in the decades after the Civil War to hold ceremonies, meetings and libraries under one roof. Freemasonry had been established in Boston since the 1700s, and its halls were among the most visible institutions on the city's streets. As a color print, the view was likely made for a popular audience, when hand-colored and chromolithographic city scenes were prized as affordable souvenirs and records of local landmarks. The building's pale, elaborate façade would have stood out among the brick commercial blocks around it.
