The title, which is cut off in the record, begins with "The President's house," so this print shows the executive residence in Washington, the building known in its early years as the President's House before the name White House came into common use. Construction began in 1792 to a design attributed to James Hoban, and the building was occupied by John Adams in 1800. The shelflist card links the print to a Robinson, G. & S., but the record gives no date and does not confirm the maker's role, so the view's exact period remains unknown. The title's partial wording and the missing date are worth keeping in mind when comparing it with other views of the building.
