The most distinctive thing about this view is its subject: the President's House, the building later known universally as the White House, shown here around 1866 when it was still a relatively new kind of photographic subject. The print belongs to a series of views of national buildings in Washington, D.C., made in the 1860s, when the capital was still recovering from the Civil War and the executive mansion stood as a symbol of the Union government. Photographers of the period often documented such buildings for sale to visitors and officials, so the picture captures how the building looked to contemporaries rather than how it appears in later decades.
