This stereograph is a card carrying two nearly identical photographs of the Executive Mansion, which produced a three-dimensional image when viewed through a stereoscope. Washington publisher J.F. Jarvis issued it from his shop on Pennsylvania Avenue, and the card is dated only to the 1890s. Stereo views like this were sold widely as parlor entertainment and let people far from the capital see famous buildings in apparent depth. The house had been the official residence of presidents since John Adams, and this card shows it as it looked at the close of the nineteenth century.
