Thanksgiving in the United States grew from autumn harvest feasts and days of prayer held by colonial communities, and it became a national holiday after Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a day of thanksgiving in 1863. Congress later set the observance on the fourth Thursday of November, and by the twentieth century the day had settled into its familiar mix of family dinners, parades and football. Pictures from this occasion often show the table, the meal or the gathering itself, and they reward a close look at the clothing, furnishings and customs of their period. Without more detail in the record, the image is best read as a glimpse of how Americans marked the holiday.
