Blodget's Hotel, built in 1793 on Washington's early streets, was one of the first large buildings the young federal city saw, and it was a speculative venture by Samuel Blodget, a land promoter who hoped to profit from the capital's growth. The hotel's ambitions outran its finances, and Blodget's fortunes faded, but the building outlived him and later served the government as the General Post Office. This wood engraving, probably made decades after the hotel's construction, shows how the structure looked in its later public role. The record's date range is broad, so the print is best read as a view of the city's early history seen through a later lens.
