Seventeenth Street Northwest runs past the Pan American Union Building at the left edge of this view, a white marble structure that opened in 1910 and was funded largely by Andrew Carnegie. The building housed the Pan American Union, the organization that later became the Organization of American States, so its presence on a Washington street reflected the country's growing diplomatic ties with Latin America in the early twentieth century. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the United States and sold its views widely, made this large glass plate negative between 1910 and 1915, and the record notes that it came to the Library of Congress as a gift in 1949.
