Labeled "Guatemalan fliers" and dated July 31, 1929, this glass negative captures a moment when aviation was drawing wide public attention, only a couple of years after Charles Lindbergh's 1927 transatlantic flight. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., commercial studio active in the early twentieth century, made and kept the plate, and its title was recorded from the company's own notes, so the identification of the men as Guatemalan airmen has not been independently confirmed. Visible streaks and blemishes are typical of aging glass plates, and they are part of what the negative shows about its age.
