Oscar DePriest, the Chicago Republican who had won his seat in Congress the year before, appears here with a man named Morris Lewis, on a glass negative dated May 8, 1929. DePriest was the first Black American elected to Congress in the 20th century, so a photograph from his early months in office has historical weight. The National Photo Company, a commercial studio that recorded officials, visitors and public events, made the plate, and it reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. The glass shows streaks and blemishes from deterioration of its original coating, which are worth noticing when judging the image's clarity.
