The Frankenstein monster, a figure from Mary Shelley's 1818 novel, serves here as a stand-in for communism, a symbol Cold War cartoonists often reached for. The subject headings link the drawing to relations between China and the Soviet Union and to the Kremlin, pointing to the strained partnership between Moscow and Beijing in the late 1950s. Bill Mauldin, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner known for his World War II cartoons of soldiers Willie and Joe, drew it for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, where it ran on July 8, 1958.
