This centerfold lithograph from *Puck*'s September 19, 1900 issue casts the presidential campaign as a volatile contest, with its title, "Another explosion at hand," hinting at a blast of political fallout. The cartoon's subjects are William McKinley, the Republican incumbent, and William Jennings Bryan, the Democratic challenger, whose opposition to American imperialism in the Philippines after the Spanish-American War became a central issue that year. Joseph Keppler's weekly, known for elaborate color centerfolds, used such images to skewer both candidates and the policies they represented. McKinley won reelection that November and was assassinated in 1901.
