What sets this lithograph apart from other Civil War battle prints is the observation balloon drifting in the distance, a reminder that the Union army used tethered balloons to scout Confederate positions during the Peninsula Campaign. The print depicts the fighting at Fair Oaks, Virginia, on May 31, 1862, when Confederate forces under Joseph E. Johnston struck part of George B. McClellan's army just east of Richmond. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for inexpensive popular prints, issued the hand-colored image later that year to satisfy public interest in news from the front.
