The picture shows the German airship Hindenburg as it burns and drops toward the mooring field at Lakehurst, New Jersey, in May 1937. The LZ 129 had crossed the Atlantic from Frankfurt and was coming in to land at the Navy's air station when its hydrogen envelope ignited, and the fire consumed the ship within about half a minute. Dozens of people died, and the disaster ended the era of passenger airship travel. Photographs like this one, taken by newsreel and press cameramen on the field, became the defining images of the event.
