Its title promises that recruits could Learn and Earn at once, and its caption, "Give 'er the gun," captures the brash slang of the day. Published in Boston in 1917, the year the United States entered the First World War, this color lithograph by W.Z. Forbes urged young men to join the Army Air Service, which was growing quickly and needed pilots, mechanics and aircraft workers. The image plays on the excitement of flight, with airplanes and airships that were still novel to most civilians.
