Few attractions in 1849 New York drew crowds like the giants on display at Barnum's American Museum, and this print presents a pair billed as "the Quaker giant and giantess." Phineas T. Barnum's Broadway museum mixed curiosities, performers and natural history under one roof, and it stood as a fixture of city life from the early 1840s until a fire destroyed it in 1865. Exhibition prints like this one served as both advertising and souvenir, so the image shows how Barnum sold novelty as much as it records the performers themselves.
