Two cherub angels share the frame of this Christmas greetings postcard, a small, sentimental form of holiday communication that grew popular in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Cards like this were typically printed in quantity by lithographic presses and sent between family and friends during the Christmas season, with the greeting itself often set in ornamental lettering beneath the figures. Winged children rendered in soft pastel tones were a favorite motif of the period, borrowing from older Renaissance painting and linking the seasonal message to the nativity and the announcement to the shepherds.
