Three cherubs appear together on this card, which is inscribed with the German words Glaube, Liebe, Hoffnung: faith, love and hope. These are the three theological virtues that Saint Paul names at the close of his hymn to love in 1 Corinthians 13:13, and they were a common theme in Christian devotional art. Cards like this were a popular form of sentimental German printing, sent for holidays, birthdays and family occasions, so the image worked as a blessing as much as a religious picture. Pairing childlike angels with abstract virtues was typical of that gentle, sentimental taste.
