Two cherubs, the winged infant figures of Renaissance and Baroque art, are shown here playing a drum and a tambourine, a lively departure from the solemn heavenly music usually assigned to angels. Cherubs like these were often painted as playful companions in religious scenes, and the pairing of a drum with a tambourine would have read to viewers as festive, even earthly, merriment. Images of musical putti grew especially popular in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, when artists used such scenes to show joy and the delights of the senses alongside sacred themes.
