Cherubs with pan pipes are a familiar figure in European painting, and this one is set off by its pink drapery, a soft color that would have been costly to produce in earlier centuries. Putti like this one, plump winged children who play music or hold garlands, grew out of classical Roman decoration and were revived during the Renaissance and again in the Baroque period. Artists used them to suggest innocence, joy and the presence of the heavenly realm, often placing them in the corners of altarpieces or ceilings. The pan pipes link the figure to pastoral myth as well as to Christian imagery, a blend that gave painters room to treat sacred subjects with a lighter touch.
