A cherub drifts across the sheet trailing pink drapery and an armful of flowers, the kind of sentimental figure that filled Victorian scrap albums. Chromolithographs like this were printed in multiple color stones, so each layer of pink, green and gold had to be aligned by hand, which is part of why the colours can look slightly offset today. Scraps such as this one were cut out and pasted into albums, on Valentines and greeting cards, and onto decorated boxes, where children and families collected them as keepsakes. Angels and cherubs were especially popular in these designs because they could stand for innocence, love or remembrance without any particular creed.
