Two winged figures with curly hair and soft, rosy faces hover side by side in this vintage chromolithograph, a style of color printing that was popular in Europe and America from the mid-1800s into the early 1900s. Prints like this were often made for greeting cards, devotional keepsakes, and home decoration, and the cherubic angel was a favorite motif in Victorian sentiment. Chromolithographs were built up from separate stones, one for each color, so the bright tints and fine shading in such pictures show the skill of the lithographers who produced them. The image speaks to a time when angels were as much a comforting domestic presence as a religious one.
