This 1936 silkscreen poster advertises "Young Tramps," a dance production choreographed by Don Oscar Becque and presented by the Federal Dance theater, a unit of the Federal theater Project in New York. The Federal theater Project was one of the arts programs of the Works Progress Administration, created to put unemployed actors, dancers, and designers back to work during the Great Depression. Its posters were produced by the WPA's graphic arts division, and many of them, like this one, used bold flat color and simplified forms to catch the eye of passersby on city streets. The subject of tramps reflects the period, when vagrancy and itinerant labor were common sights in American life.
