Two unidentified children are the subject of this small sixth-plate daguerreotype, a format that was smaller and less costly than the larger plates and suited to the many family portraits made in the 1850s. The brass mat is stamped with the name F. Grice, and the case and hallmark correspond to references in Rinhart's catalog of American daguerreotypes, which helps place the piece among the cased portraits of its decade. Exposures still took seconds rather than the instant of later photography, so sitters, especially young ones, had to hold still for the picture to come out sharp. The plate entered the Library of Congress as a purchase from the Anthony Barboza collection in 1999.
