Curtis titled this study "The Mush-Basket-Karok," linking it to the Karok people of the Klamath River country in northwestern California and to a basket used in preparing mush, a staple porridge often made from ground acorns in that region. The image appeared opposite page 86 of volume 13 of Curtis's *The North American Indian*, the twenty-volume survey he published between 1907 and 1930. Basketry was central to Karok, Yurok, and Hupa life, and Curtis often posed his subjects so that such objects could be seen in detail. The record does not give a date or identify the sitter.
