Sarah Fisher Ames is the sitter named in this print, and its caption card lists it only as No. 400B, so the record gives no date and no photographer. She is remembered as a nineteenth-century American sculptor, one of the women who built careers in a field that was still largely closed to them, often working through commissioned portrait busts. Because the card is undated and its details are unverified, the exact sitting and studio are unknown. The print is still a useful record of how a working artist of her period chose to present herself to the camera.
