This 1880 bird's-eye view shows Rochester from an imagined elevated vantage point, with its streets, rail lines, and major buildings drawn in near profile along the Genesee River. Rochester was then one of the country's leading flour-milling centers, earning the nickname "Flour City," and its mills, canal-era warehouses, and nursery and seed businesses shaped its skyline and economy. Panoramic city views like this were commissioned by civic boosters and sold to residents and businesses, so they doubled as portraits of local pride. The lithographers, H.H. Rowley & Co. and Beck & Pauli, were known for this kind of detailed town view, which makes the map useful for seeing how the city was laid out in 1880.
