Few American collections hold a Soviet poster as direct as this one, which carries only the single word "Vietnam" and was printed in color in 1967 by the artist R. Sur'ianinov for the Moscow publisher Sovetsky Khudozhnik. The Soviet Union used posters like it to take a public position against the United States' military role in Southeast Asia, and the same word appeared as a headline in Pravda, the Communist Party newspaper. The record's subject terms, which cover the moral and ethical debate over the war and the protest movements of the 1960s, show how the poster reflects the wider international argument over the conflict. The U.S. Army is named in the record's notes, which points to the American military as the poster's target.
