Here a French lithograph signed by Camille Boutet asks its viewers to give up sweets, with children and confections as its central subjects. Its title, "Nous saurons nous en priver," translates as "We will know how to sacrifice." Sugar was scarce during the First World War, and wartime appeals like this one asked families to forgo treats so that supplies could go to the army and civilians. The record also lists the United States Food Administration as sponsor, which points to the wider Allied effort to manage food at home and abroad in 1918.
