Five members of the Benjamin family stand around a column in this hand-colored half-plate daguerreotype, made sometime between 1845 and 1858. The mat is stamped "Whitney, Roch. NY," and the sitters are identified from left to right as Cornelia Juliaette, Zina Hitchcock, Frances Antoinette, Samuel Clark, and Joanette Benjamin. Hand-coloring added tints to the otherwise silver-toned plate, and the column pose reflects the formal conventions of studio portraiture in that period. Frances Antoinette Benjamin later became the photographer Frances Benjamin Johnston, who donated the plate to the Library of Congress.
