Elihu Root, the lawyer and statesman who served as Secretary of War and later Secretary of State and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912, is caught here in the act of striding toward a motorcar with its chauffeur standing by. The photograph dates to about 1912, a time when automobiles were still a novelty for many Americans and a private car signaled wealth and status. Pictures like this one, circulated through press and copyright deposits, helped shape how the public saw prominent men in the age of motoring. Notice how the chauffeur's formal posture contrasts with the purposeful gait of the statesman.
