Few surviving 1840s portraits show a sitter turned three-quarters toward the lens with a full beard, which makes this 1844 daguerreotype a useful record of how men were posed in the earliest years of photography. Exposures then ran from several seconds to minutes, so sitters were braced in head clamps or leaned against a stand to hold still. The daguerreotype process produced a single, mirror-like image on a silvered copper plate, and its sharp detail and reflective surface are worth noticing when you tilt the plate. The dark coat, which reads almost black in the plate, reflects the fashion of the period and the practical need for tones that held up under the process.
