Under its promise of "Nach Südamerika in 3 Tagen!" ("To South America in 3 days!"), this 1930s German poster advertises a flight, not a steamship crossing. The Graf Zeppelin, the rigid airship built by Luftschiffbau Zeppelin, carried paying passengers on scheduled South Atlantic runs from 1934, and the Hamburg-America Line, a major shipping company, sold the tickets. Crossings by sea to Brazil took about two weeks, so the airship's speed was the selling point. The Nazi government promoted the Zeppelin as a symbol of German engineering, which gives the poster its political undertone as well as its commercial purpose.
