A Christmas tree set out in a field, under a title urging readers to send "Liebesgaben," or "love gifts," to the soldiers, makes this Munich lithograph stand out. Printed in 1914, the poster belongs to the first wartime Christmas, when Germany's home front organized large campaigns to send food, tobacco, clothing, and small comforts to troops on the Western Front. Its monogram signature, "AM," is the only artist credit in the record, and the printer, Oscar Consée, was a Munich firm. The image shows how charity and holiday sentiment were folded into wartime mobilization.
