The title, *Rote Kreuz Sammlung* ("Red Cross collection"), and the date place this in the first months of the war, when German towns organized street and house-to-house drives for money and supplies. In 1914 the German Red Cross and its local branches depended heavily on volunteers, many of them women, to gather donations, bandages, and clothing for soldiers and military hospitals. Such collections gave civilians on the home front a visible role in the war effort and were widely reported in the press. The record offers little more detail, but the title points to a public fundraising effort in the war's opening year.
