The record names only the Michigan Transportation Company as the steamer's owner, so the vessel itself is not identified. The negative is an 8 by 10 inch glass plate, a large format that photographers of the 1890s used for detailed views, and it carries Detroit Publishing Company number 32351. That Detroit firm issued thousands of views of American rivers, lakes and resorts around 1900, when passenger steamers were a familiar sight on the Great Lakes and inland waterways. The plate came to the Library of Congress as a 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado.
