Its title, "Great horses in a great race," promises a contest between champion animals, and the Currier & Ives firm of New York published it around 1891 as a color chromolithograph. By then the company had built a large business on sporting and country subjects, and horse racing was a major pastime in the United States, drawing crowds to tracks across the country. Chromolithographs like this were built up from a separate stone for each color, so the bright tints on a sheet depended on careful registration. The print is credited to J. Cameron, and it shows how popular illustration carried the excitement of the track into middle-class homes.
