This engraving shows the Rev. Dr. Frederick Dalcho (1770-1836), a Charleston, South Carolina, figure who worked as both a physician and an Episcopal clergyman, a combination that was not unusual among educated men of his time. The print reproduces a painting by Charles Fraser, the Charleston portraitist and miniaturist, and was engraved by Asher B. Durand, who trained as an engraver before becoming one of the leading American landscape painters. Prints like this one were widely sold in the decades before photography and offer a useful view of how southern professional men chose to present themselves.
