Frederick Dalcho, an Episcopal clergyman and physician from Charleston, South Carolina, is the subject here, and the engraving records his features as a portrait of a Lowcountry churchman who died in 1836. The likeness was painted by Charles Fraser, a Charleston artist known for portraits and miniatures, and then engraved by Asher B. Durand, a New York engraver who later led the National Academy of Design. The record dates the print only tentatively, to somewhere between 1830 and 1860, so it may have been made after Dalcho's death. Such engravings were often reproduced for books and collectors, which is one reason they survive today.
