A dark coat and a loosely tied cravat are the main features of this profile portrait, which is dated 1844, a time when the daguerreotype was only about five years old. Daguerreotypes were made on silvered copper plates, and their sitters had to hold still for long exposures, which is one reason so many early portraits show formal, composed faces. Because the image is a profile rather than the frontal pose more common in the period, it offers a slightly different view of how sitters presented themselves to the new camera. The sitter's name is not recorded here, so the picture is best read as a window onto fashion and portrait practice in the mid-1840s.
