The record says little about the sitter, but his full beard and dark clothing stand out against the plate's deep, low-contrast tones. Daguerreotypes like this were made on polished silver-coated copper, so the image often sits behind glass and seems to shift, reflecting the viewer's surroundings as the angle changes. Early sitters had to hold still for long exposures in strong daylight, and that stillness, combined with the metallic surface, gives portraits from the 1840s their quiet, almost ghostly presence.
