A bearded man in a dark jacket is the entire subject of this 1844 daguerreotype, and the record names no sitter, so the face is the only clue to who he was. That year sits just five years after Louis Daguerre publicized his process in 1839, when exposures still ran several minutes and subjects had to hold rigid poses without blinking. Portraits like this one were among the first things people paid to have made, and a daguerreotype's mirror-like silver surface makes the image shift with the angle of light. Its unusual sharpness reflects how the process captured fine detail, including the texture of beard and cloth.
